Meet Lillie! Lillie is a new client this year, and her bees are hunkering down for winter. She's learning the ropes with SPC to guide her. If you want to know more about our hive management service, visit the hive management page.
Lillie is interested in beekeeping because it runs in her blood. Her grandfather's family moved to Virginia from Poltava, Ukraine in the early 1900's. They farmed an apple orchard and apiary from 1910 t0 1935. After emigrating, they traveled by train from Vermont to Canada, which was too cold - so they headed back south, beehives in tow. They got as far as Lynchburg, VA before the train jostled, unsettling the beehives (y'all know what happens). The conductor said "whomever owns these beehives, this is your last stop! Off my train!" And hence, the Samouce family became a Virginia family.
Lillie's grandfather was about 10 years old at the time, and it was his duty to pull a wagon through the streets of Lynchburg with jars of honey for sale.
Lillie found some amazing photographs of her family on their Virginia bee farm. Her farm isn't far away at all in Cumberland, and she wants to connect back to her roots through beekeeping.
SPC is dedicated to helping people help pollinators. We also just help people. If you want to help the people of Ukraine, we are still selling our Ukraine seed mix and donating 100% of the sales to two organizations assisting refugees. Email us to get some.

Beekeeping classes and the right tools for the job.
We are pollinator experts in Virginia. We specialize in honey bees but can help you with other pollinator questions as well. We have bees for sale, we install bee hives, and travel most of Virginia including Richmond, Charlottesville, and the Shenandoah Valley. We also sell beekeeping supplies in Charlottesville at our monthly Tent Sales.
Habitat loss is a leading cause of pollinator population declines. Bees, birds, bats, small animals, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, and wasps can all act as pollinators. Approximately 80% of the plants in the world benefit from pollinators visiting flowers. Honey bees, along with wild and native bees, pollinate at least one third of the world's food crops.
Honey bee populations are estimated to be half of what they were in the 1940's. Besides being critical for the survival of the species, beekeeping is a calming and fascinating hobby for the whole family. Improve pollination in your crops and gardens. Invest in your property. Increase pollinator habitat in your community. Be a part of the solution.
